SPOT
Shirokane Blue Pond
A mysterious pond with a blue water surface. During disaster prevention work on Mt. Tokachi, water accumulated in a dam, which took on a mysterious blue color, and combined with the withered larch trees, created a fantastical landscape. Before long, it came to be called the "Blue Pond." We recommend visiting on a clear, windless morning, so you can stay overnight in Biei and enjoy the mystical scenery.
You can enjoy the various shades of blue depending on the season and weather, such as the contrast between the fresh greenery and the pond, or the water surface colored by autumn leaves. Be sure to experience the fantastical BIEI BLUE, which changes with the seasons. When visiting, please be sure to follow tourist etiquette and photography rules.
During the winter, the blue water surface cannot be seen due to accumulated snow, so Biei's Blue Pond is lit up so that you can enjoy it even in winter.
Note: Never step over the fence into the Blue Pond! It is life-threatening! The pond freezes over in the middle of winter, but please do not step onto the surface of the lake as there is a risk of the ice cracking.
