SPOT
Shirohige-no-taki Waterfall
A waterfall with a 30-meter drop that looks like a white beard. It is one of the tourist attractions in "Biei Shirogane Onsen Town" where you can see up close the subterranean water from the Tokachidake mountain range that flows out from between natural rocks and falls vigorously into the mountain stream and the cobalt blue sparkling Biei River splashing in the air. This waterfall is classified as a "submerged waterfall," which is rare in Japan. The river below, which can be seen from the bridge, is commonly called the "Blue River," and its blue flow is the source of the "Shirogane Blue Pond" located downstream.
The bridge is also illuminated at night, a permanent feature since November 2008. In winter, the contrast between the waterfall line, the white of the snow, and the rock surface becomes more pronounced, and the spray and steam rising from the falls create fog and ice on the trees, making the scenery even more fantastic. The blue stream of the Blue River, which runs straight through the white snow, also appears even more vivid in winter.
