Kototoi no Matsu
Near Kabutonuma, one can see the "Kototoi no Matsu", a 1,200 year old, 14 meter tall onko (yew) tree. It is said that the tree has been here in Kabutonuma since the Heian period (794-1185). Since then, the tree has been a guardian deity of the area as a sign from the gods, because people who tried to cut it down fell ill or got injured. The net behind the tree is placed to protect it from the wind. In addition to being the town tree, the yew is also mentioned in various books and other publications as a famous tree in Hokkaido.
