Shigure Otoha Poem Monument

Shigure Otoha, an honorary citizen of Rishiri Town and a much-loved songwriter, was born in 1893 in Kutsugata, Rishiri Town. After working at the Kutsugata Village Office and at the Taxation Bureau of the Ministry of Finance, in 1925, at the request of Kodansha, he published his song "Asahi wo arabite (Later: Departure from the Port)" in the new mass-market magazine "King. In 1960, he erected a monument to his poems, "The Port of Debune," at Cape Kutsugata. After this, islanders began to call Cape Kutsugata "Donton Cape," as in the lyrics.
