Muroran Minpo Minnano Aquarium (Muroran Municipal Aquarium)
Opened in June 1953, this is the oldest aquarium in Hokkaido. It was built on land where a whale dismantling factory used to be, as a place for citizens to relax. The aquarium breeds and exhibits about 120 species of creatures native to Hokkaido and the suburbs of Muroran, as well as rare tropical fish native to the Honshu area. Among them, the Muroran Aquarium's symbolic "aburabouzu," a fish that lives in the deep sea on the Pacific side of the island, has been on display since August 1969, ahead of other aquariums in Japan.
