Amanogawa
The Amanogawa is a second-class river with a watershed extension of 28.6 km, rich in nature, originating in the watershed of the Watashima Mountains.
Like the Amanogawa River in the heavens, it has long been familiar to the people of the town and has quietly watched over the history of Kaminokuni.
Amanogawa River
A clear stream flowing through the center of the town. It is a Mecca for river fishing. It is especially crowded during the ayu fishing season from July to August. The small and medium-sized tributary rivers are also good for landlocked salmon and iwana fishing. It is said that there is a colony (breeding ground) of herons on the middle bank of the middle stream, and they show us their graceful dance in late autumn.
Origin of the name
In 1618, Jeronimo de Angelis (from Sicily, Italy), a Christian Jesuit missionary, landed near the Amanogawa River in Kaminokuni due to a terrible storm and headed overland to Matsumae. He was the first European to land in Hokkaido. Three years later, De Angelis drew up a map of Ezo (Hokkaido), and the place where he landed was marked "Tsuga," which is said to be the origin of the name "Amanogawa," the Chinese character for the ancient name of Kaminokuni, Tsuga (Tega), meaning "heavenly river.
★The romantic Amanogawa Bridge★
The bridge is 188 m long and 15.5 m wide, with the distinctive design of the railings depicting a magpie forming a bridge with its wings in a row. The streetlights are dark green, expressing the image of a shooting star with gentle curves and straight lines, and are designed for pedestrian use only. Between the bridge's high railings is a copper plate relief embossed with a zodiacal picture of the 12 constellations of the ecliptic. At night, the fixed stars that form the constellations twinkle like the real thing.
