Otaru Art Base

Otaru Art Base is a place where four buildings were constructed in the first half of the 20th century, when Otaru was in its heyday, displaying outstanding works of art and crafts from Japan and around the world that adorned the era. By having more people come to see the exhibits, we hope to foster a rich and moving spirit and to spread the wonder of culture and art to the world.

<Stained Glass Museum (former Takahashi Warehouse, former Arata Trading Company)>
You can see about 100 pieces of stained glass made using traditional techniques that were created in England about 100 years ago and that actually decorated church windows. Please enjoy the beautiful and majestic light in this space.

<Former Mitsui Bank Otaru Branch>
The building's classic stone exterior is impressive. Enjoy the sturdy bank architecture with its stately design, beautiful plaster ceilings and marble counters, all of which evoke the prosperity of the leading economic city in northern Japan.

<Nitori Museum of Art (former Hokkaido Takushoku Bank Otaru Branch)>
The museum exhibits a wide variety of art from Japan and abroad, including Japanese paintings, Western paintings, sculptures, and prints by artists such as Yokoyama Taikan, Foujita Tsuguharu, and Takamura Koun.

<Western Art Museum (formerly Naniwa Warehouse)>
You can see Western stained glass, Art Nouveau and Art Deco glass crafts, furniture, and other Western art pieces.
