Otaru Art Base

The Otaru Art Base exhibits and opens to the public outstanding works of art and crafts from Japan and around the world that brilliantly colored the era, housed in five buildings constructed in the first half of the 20th century when Otaru was at the height of its prosperity. By having as many people as possible view these works, we aim to be a place that nurtures a sense of enrichment and wonder, and communicates the splendor of culture and art to the world.

You can view approximately 100 stained glass pieces made in England about 100 years ago using traditional techniques, which actually adorned church windows. Please enjoy the beautiful and solemn space of light.

A building with an impressive classical stone exterior. Enjoy the robust bank architecture with its stately design, the beautiful plaster-decorated ceilings and marble counters, and the architectural style reminiscent of the prosperity of Northern Japan's premier economic city.

This museum showcases a collection that allows you to enjoy a wide variety of art from Japan and abroad all at once, including Japanese paintings, Western paintings, sculptures, and prints by artists such as Taikan Yokoyama, Tsuguharu Foujita, and Koun Takamura.

You can view Western art pieces such as stained glass from Europe and America, Art Nouveau and Art Deco glass crafts, and furniture.

Utilizing the "Asakusabashi Otaru Canal Warehouse Building" facing the Otaru Canal, this museum will open on July 24, 2025. It is a museum where you can experience the charm of ukiyo-e.
