Sapporo Clock Tower

The oldest surviving clock tower in Japan, whose bell chimes the time every hour on the hour

The official name of the Sapporo Clock Tower is the Former Sapporo Agricultural College Drill Hall. It was built in 1878 as a facility for Sapporo Agricultural College, the predecessor of Hokkaido University, based on the idea of its first vice principal, Dr. Clark. This building has served as an office for educational organizations, a military facility, and a city library in the Showa period, and was designated an Important Cultural Property of Japan in June 1970. Having undergone several restoration works, it is now loved as a famous spot representing Sapporo and as a clock tower that tells the time to the citizens.

Immediately after entering the building, there is a shop perfect for souvenirs, such as Sapporo's famous sweets, candy with a clock tower design on the can, and butter candy with Dr. Clark printed on it. The clock tower is also lit up at sunset, allowing you to see its majestic appearance. In winter, the snow that covers the clock tower shines even more when it is lit up.
