Sapporo Clock Tower
The oldest existing clock tower in Japan, whose bell tolls the time in the city every hour
"Sapporo Clock Tower" Its official name is "Former Sapporo Agricultural College Demonstration Hall". It was built in 1878 as a facility of Sapporo Agricultural College, the predecessor of Hokkaido University, based on the concept of Dr. Clark, the first vice principal of the college. The building, which has served as an office for educational organizations, a military facility, and a municipal library in the Showa period, was designated as a National Important Cultural Property in June 1970. After undergoing several restoration works, it is now a well-known landmark of Sapporo and a beloved clock tower that tells time for the citizens of Sapporo.
Just inside the museum, there is a store where you can buy souvenirs such as famous Sapporo sweets, candies with the clock tower on the can, and butter candies with Dr. Clark printed on them. When the sun goes down, the clock tower is illuminated, and visitors can enjoy the majestic sight of the clock tower. Winter is also a great time to visit, as the snow surrounding the clock tower is even more beautiful when it is lit up.
