The Sapporo Clock Tower Was Originally a "???" - Find Out Its Surprising Past! [Dropkick on My Devil! X Mame Anime Collab (4)]
This spring marks the start of a collaboration project between "Dropkick on My Devil! X Mame Anime (Hokkaido Arc)" and Domingo! The anime features various regions of Hokkaido, but what's in store this time!? Here's the fourth episode that was broadcast!
Many of you have probably seen the exterior of the Clock Tower, which was called "surprisingly small" in the anime. Its red roof is charming and memorable, isn't it?

As the title suggests, did you know that when it was completed in 1878, it wasn't actually a "clock tower"? It was originally the "Drill Hall" for the Sapporo Agricultural College, the predecessor to Hokkaido University. It was used as an indoor gymnasium for students' military training and for entrance and graduation ceremonies. It was reportedly built based on the vision of Dr. Clark, famous for his quote, "Boys, be ambitious!" On the second floor of the Clock Tower, there's even a spot where you can take a photo with Dr. Clark.

A space that recreates the atmosphere of the time spreads across the second floor. If you sit on the long benches, you might feel like you've slipped back in time to the Meiji era!?

The clock tower was added to this Drill Hall three years after the building was completed. The clear, beautiful chimes of the pendulum clock have long been a source of pride for the citizens of Sapporo. And it's amazing that it's still in operation today! On the second floor, an identical model is on display, showing how the clock mechanism works.

Now, I've been talking a lot about what's on the second floor. So, what's on the first floor of the Clock Tower...?

It's filled with old photographs and materials, allowing you to learn all about the history of the Clock Tower.
"Did you know the Clock Tower was originally built in a different location?"
"Its official name was decided as 'Sapporo Clock Tower' in 1998."
...Why not show off the knowledge you've gained here to your friends?
Stay tuned for the next installment of our collaboration with "Dropkick on My Devil! X Mame Anime (Hokkaido Arc)"!
