The first limestone cave ruins identified in Hokkaido

Misato Cave is a limestone cavern formed by erosion of limestone on the slopes of Mt. Nikoro in the Misato district of Kitami City. It is also known as the first limestone cave ruins identified in Hokkaido.

■ Visit to Misato Cave
Misato Cave is open to the public every year from July 1st to October 31st, during which time the grass is cut and other maintenance work is carried out. From winter to spring, there is a lot of snow on the path, making it difficult to pass through.

■How to get to Misato Cave
Misato Cave is located approximately 5.5 km from the forest road entrance. Continue along the forest road until you come to a fork in the road where you see this sign, and take the downhill path on the right. Vehicles are not allowed at the fork in the road, so you must proceed on foot. Going down the slope you will come to a wooden bridge. After crossing the bridge, the steep slope continues to the cave. The path is narrow and slippery in places, so please walk with care.

■Misato Cave Ruins
It is known that Misato Cave was used as a camping spot by people long ago. Excavations have uncovered remains from various eras, including those from the Ainu and Jomon periods, and some that date back to the Late Paleolithic period.
