A town of Japan's best scallops, onions, curling, and hot springs

Population:110,000
Kitami City is the largest city in the Okhotsk region, located in eastern Hokkaido, with a population of about 120,000. It boasts an overwhelming size, ranking first in Hokkaido and fourth in all of Japan by area. Located about a 40-minute drive from Memanbetsu Airport and within a two-hour drive of major tourist destinations, it serves as a key hub for Okhotsk tourism and business. The transportation infrastructure, including JR lines and intercity buses, is well-developed, making direct access from the Tokyo metropolitan area very convenient.
In terms of its natural environment, a major strength is the extremely low occurrence of natural disasters such as earthquakes, providing a safe and secure place to live year-round. Four unique regions have merged into one—"Kitami," with its convenient urban functions; "Tan'no," with its vast rural landscapes; "Tokoro," which faces Lake Saroma and is a mecca for curling; and "Rubeshibe," home to the famous Onneyu Hot Springs—allowing you to enjoy the vibrant expressions of nature throughout the four seasons.
Industries blessed with vast land and a rich sea also thrive, and the city boasts the largest production volume of onions and white kidney beans in Japan. Furthermore, its scallop catch from the Sea of Okhotsk is also the largest in Japan, filling the city with exquisite culinary attractions. It is a hub city that shines most powerfully in the Okhotsk region, blending the blessings of magnificent nature, hot springs, and the vitality of sports.
