SPOT
Kitami Peppermint Memorial Hall ・ Peppermint Distillation Hall
Kitami Hacca, whose production started from around Meiji 35 (1902), reached its golden age in Showa 14 (1939), grew to occupy about 70% of the world peppermint market at that time, and became an important industry forming the foundation (ishizue) of current Kitami. For this reason, on November 30, Heisei 19 (2007), it was certified as a Japan Modernization Industrial Heritage by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry.
What greatly contributed to the development of this peppermint industry was the Hokuren Kitami Peppermint Factory, which opened in Showa 9 (1934). The facility that was built the following year as a research institute of the same factory, at the same time as the factory that finished its role was dismantled in Showa 58 (1983), was donated from the Hokuren Agricultural Cooperative to Kitami City, and in Showa 61 (1986), it has been opened to the public in order to take on a new role as the Kitami Hacca Memorial Museum.
