Kitami Mulberry Memorial Hall and Mulberry Distillery
Archives of the History of Kitami Mulberry
Production of Kitami Mulberry, which began around 1902, reached its peak in 1939 and grew to account for approximately 70% of the world market for mulberry at that time, making it an important industry that formed the foundation (isuzu) of Kitami as it exists today. For this reason, on November 30, 2007, it was recognized by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry as a Heritage of Industrial Modernization of Japan.
The Hokuren Kitami Usukari Factory, which opened in 1934, contributed greatly to the development of this industry. In 1983, when the factory was demolished, the Hokuren Agricultural Cooperative Association donated the facility to Kitami City, and in 1986, it was opened to the public to assume a new role as the Kitami Hakka Memorial Museum.
