Some of the facilities on this itinerary have stamps, so be sure to enter. This campaign is also a great way to learn about the movement to protect the Okhotsk drift ice from global warming.

20:00 Abashiri City

And when you think of Okhotsk, you have to think of its seafood!

You'll be staying in Abashiri tonight, so be sure to savor the local flavors for dinner!

Abashiri is also famous for many other local gourmet dishes, such as Okhotsk Abashiri Zangi Don (fried chicken rice bowl), Abashiri Moyoro Nabe (hot pot), and Abashiri Chanpon (noodle soup). You can find restaurants on the Abashiri City Tourism Association's website, so check it out for ideas.

After enjoying a delicious meal, there's one more thing to do before setting off in the morning. You'll need to purchase your tickets for Day 2 from "OkhoNavi." OkhoNavi is a service that allows you to buy discounted public transportation tickets for the Okhotsk area anytime, anywhere, right from your smartphone. No app download is required.

You'll want to get the "Abashiri Sightseeing Facility Tour Bus & Doko Bus Common 1-Day Pass" (1,500 yen, tax included), which gives you unlimited rides on the "Doko Bus" for the entire day. The Doko Bus is incredibly convenient for sightseeing in Abashiri, but it operates differently from regular route buses. Let's do a quick review.

The Doko Bus does not have a fixed timetable. There are bus stops all over Abashiri City. First, passengers check the numbers of the bus stop where they want to get on and the bus stop where they want to get off. Then, you just call the call center and give them those numbers. That's it—your reservation is complete.

All that's left is to go to the designated bus stop, and when the bus arrives, tell the driver your reservation number to board. You can check bus stop locations in the user guide distributed at various places in Abashiri. You can also make reservations from your smartphone and access a digital bus stop map via a QR code. Please note that the bus operates from 9:00 to 16:00, and the reservation desk closes at 15:45.

"Tour of Okhotsk" Day 2: Depart Abashiri Bus Terminal at 10:00

Means of Transport: Doko Bus, JR Train
Discount Pass Used: Abashiri Sightseeing Facility Tour Bus & Doko Bus Common 1-Day Pass

On the second day of your trip, make the most of the Doko Bus for a full day of sightseeing. First up is Abashiri's most famous attraction, the "Abashiri Prison Museum." After departing from Abashiri Station, it's about a 10-minute ride on the Doko Bus. By the way, the Abashiri 1-Day Pass not only gives you unlimited rides on the Doko Bus but also offers discounts at various facilities. You'll get 10% off the entrance fee to the Abashiri Prison Museum!

【Approx. 10 min by Doko Bus from "Abashiri Station (Platform 1)" (Bus Stop No. 509) to "Abashiri Prison Museum" (Bus Stop No. 903)】

The word "prison" might sound a bit intimidating, but you'll likely be surprised by the sheer size of the place once you step inside. The buildings were actually used at Abashiri Prison since the Meiji era, and you can still see marks on the thick beams and pillars where inmates carved them. It feels like you've traveled back in time.

While you're here, why not have lunch? The Prison Cafeteria serves a re-creation of the actual meals that the inmates used to eat. Eating this might just complete your prisoner experience... After this unique meal, it's time to leave the museum.

The second day of the journey is coming to a close. Since you're in Kitami, why not try its famous "yakiniku" (Japanese BBQ)?

Kitami has such a thriving yakiniku culture that there's even a term for it: "Kitami Yakiniku." The city is said to have the highest number of yakiniku restaurants per capita in Hokkaido. The Kitami City Tourism Association's website introduces various restaurants, so be sure to check it out and enjoy some delicious Kitami Yakiniku.

Now, before setting off on Day 3, let's buy a discount ticket from OkhoNavi.

Just follow the instructions on the "OkhoNavi" website to purchase your desired ticket. On the third day, you'll be using the Hokkaido Kitami Bus, so get the Kitami Bus Free Pass Ticket (2,000 yen, tax included)! This will give you unlimited rides on the Hokkaido Kitami Bus for the entire day.

Means of Transport: JR Train, Hokkaido Kitami Bus, Airplane (JAL)
Discount Passes Used: Kitami Bus Free Pass Ticket (1-Day), Ikouze Nippon! Donai Gurutto Wari

It's Day 3, the final day of the trip. Today's plan is to visit the tourist spots in Kitami. First, board a Hokkaido Kitami Bus at the Kitami Bus Terminal, located next to JR Kitami Station, and head to the first destination, "Michi-no-Eki Onneyu Onsen." Since you've already purchased the Kitami Bus Free Pass Ticket on OkhoNavi, payment is as simple as showing the ticket on your smartphone. How convenient!

【Approx. 1 hr by Kitami Bus from "Kitami Bus Terminal" to "Michi-no-Eki Onneyu Onsen Bus Stop"】

At Michi-no-Eki Onneyu Onsen stands one of the world's largest mechanical cuckoo clock towers. Every hour on the hour, forest fairies and the dove, Poppo-chan, appear along with music.

We'll stop by the roadside station later, but first, let's walk to the "Kita Kitsune Farm" located behind it.

【Approx. 6 min walk from "Michi-no-Eki Onneyu Onsen" to "Kita Kitsune Farm"】

9:00 Kita Kitsune Farm (Northern Fox Farm)

The Kita Kitsune Farm is easily recognizable by its red-roofed building. After all, if you're visiting Hokkaido, you'll want to see a real Ezo red fox (kita kitsune)! Here, many foxes roam freely in an open, unfenced area.

Sometimes a curious fox might approach you, but the rules here are "do not feed" and "do not touch." Just watching them in their natural state is a wonderfully soothing experience.

11:20 Kamurin Hall / Michi-no-Eki Onneyu Onsen

Inside "Kamurin Hall" at Michi-no-Eki Onneyu Onsen, there is a craft workshop where anyone can easily make wooden toys and other items under the guidance of an instructor. If you tell them how much time you have, they'll suggest something you can complete within that timeframe, making it perfect for tourists! It's sure to be a great memento of your trip.

If you're tired from sightseeing and crafting, take a break with something sweet. At Michi-no-Eki Onneyu Onsen, the "Shirohanamame Soft-Serve Ice Cream" is highly recommended. This gently sweet treat with a subtle aroma of shirohanamame (white kidney beans) is something you can only find here.

After getting off the bus at Kitami Bus Terminal, walk to the "Okhotsk Beer Factory." Even with the soft-serve break, you're probably quite hungry by now. Let's have a late lunch at the Okhotsk Beer Factory. Everything looks delicious and it's hard to choose, but the top recommendation is the "Okhotsk Kitami Shio Yakisoba"!

This is Kitami's local specialty yakisoba, made with Kitami onions and Okhotsk scallops, stir-fried in a special salt-based sauce. To finish, it's drizzled with "magic water" that's packed with scallop umami. Let's eat!
