"Truly the Edge of the World": A Breathtaking Journey to the Tip of Hokkaido's Notsuke Peninsula and the Vast "Scenery of Nothingness"

Located between the Shiretoko and Nemuro peninsulas in Hokkaido, the Notsuke Peninsula offers an extraordinary landscape. As you venture to the tip of Japan's largest sand spit, you're greeted by a surreal view of the sky and sea stretching to the horizon. A traveler's photos of this scene, often described as "the edge of the world," have garnered significant attention online.

"Hokkaido's Notsuke Peninsula is said to be at risk of parts of it disappearing under the sea within 100 years. I traveled to its very tip by motorcycle and on foot.
I get it now—the sand spit, the sea, the sky. It's no wonder they call it 'the end of the world.' I experienced an overwhelming sense of the surreal and the apocalyptic. I can see why it's considered a hidden gem of eastern Hokkaido."

The photos show a long, narrow sand spit stretching endlessly, flanked by the sea on both sides under a vast sky. With no man-made structures in sight, the purely natural landscape is breathtaking. The post has received over 2,000 likes, with comments like, "It really is the edge of the world," and "I've always wanted to go there."

Finally Reaching the "Tip" of Notsuke Peninsula

The post was made by Taiji, who travels all over Hokkaido by motorcycle. The Notsuke Peninsula, known as Japan's largest sand spit, is located between the Shiretoko and Nemuro peninsulas. He had actually visited the Nature Center the previous year but turned back, unaware that it was possible to go further toward the tip by car or motorcycle.

Later, he learned from a follower's post that he could proceed to a parking lot further down by obtaining a traffic permit. On this trip, he did just that. After a 30-minute walk from the parking lot, he finally reached the long-awaited tip of the peninsula. "When I arrived, I felt a sense of accomplishment similar to climbing a mountain," he recalls.

With the traffic permit, he successfully reached the peninsula's tip

Standing there, he found the scenery was slightly different from what he had imagined.

At the tip of the Notsuke Peninsula, there was no one else. What spread before me was a world of only the sky, the sea, and the sand spit, as far as the eye could see. The only sound was the faint whisper of the waves. I was able to experience firsthand the scenery that people online call 'the end of the world.'"

This trip fulfilled a long-held wish. "I want to go back again," he said. The Notsuke Peninsula offers a landscape that can only be found in Hokkaido. It's a sight everyone should see with their own eyes at least once.
