Overview
This is the highest mountain in southern Hokkaido at 1,520 meters above sea level, straddling Settana Town and Shimamaki Village. The name of the mountain is derived from the Ainu words "Karinpa (cherry bark) us (mountain where cherry trees grow in clusters) nupuri (mountain). The area around Mt. Kariba (approx. 226.5㎢) was designated as "Kariba-Motsuta Provincial Natural Park" in 1972. The rich nature spreading throughout the mountain, from the top to the ridge and the tree line, is a majestic landscape that soothes the hearts of those who view it. The first snowfall is observed every year around October, and snow remains near the summit until around July.
