SPOT
Kumagoro Valley (Kariba Motsuta Prefectural Natural Park)
Located upstream of Route 345, which runs parallel to the Makomanai River, this is a place that feels like a hidden gem, with a beautiful clear stream flowing through a deep valley. The name comes from the fact that the valley is so steep that even bears turn back.
The Makomanai Forest Road that leads to the valley is lined with beech and other broad-leaved trees, and in summer the lush greenery and autumn foliage that dyes the valley red and yellow create a truly spectacular sight. The view from near the suspension bridge is particularly beautiful. Hiking and mountain stream fishing are also popular here.
Beyond the valley is the Makomanai Course for climbing Mt. Kariba, where you'll find the Kumagoro Campground, a rest stop for hikers. After passing Makomanai Dam, the road narrows and becomes an unpaved forest road, so driving caution is required. The area is rich in nature, so be careful of brown bears and other wild animals. From around November to late June, the forest road leading to the valley is closed for the winter, making it impossible to reach the valley.
