SPOT
Tamagawa Park
The park is located on a small hill (about 80m above sea level) with a view of the rich paddy field landscape and Yurakubudake, and spreads around Tamagawa Shrine, a famous place for "daffodils", the Setona Town flower. The "Daffodil Square," where about 300,000 daffodils of about 30 varieties are planted, is at its best from late April to mid-May. If the timing is right, visitors can enjoy the contrast of daffodils and cherry blossoms.
The 7-hectare site is home to broadleaf forests of beech and oak, as well as artificial forests of cedar and larch. Tamagawa Shrine was built in 1892 by Goro Niwa, a prominent samurai of the former Aizu Clan and the founder of the Kita Hiyama District, in honor of Sakagami Karimaro no Mikoto, and the current shrine was rebuilt in July 1941 using Akita cypress wood.
A 400-year-old beech tree used to stand as a sacred tree, but was destroyed by lightning. In 2001, a tree was planted as a memorial tree at Doji Shrine, which is associated with the Aizu clan. After worshipping at the shrine, visitors can get a red seal at Makomanai Shrine in Kita Hiyama Ward.
