Obira is a town located in the southern part of the Rumoi Subprefecture, in the northwestern area of Hokkaido. It borders Tomamae Town to the north and Rumoi City to the south. Facing the Sea of Japan to the west and surrounded by mountains on the other three sides, it is a town blessed with nature, featuring a blue sea and lush greenery.
From the Meiji to the Taisho periods, the town prospered from herring fishing. It also once thrived as a coal-producing area, home to the Rumoi coalfield.
Currently, it is a town of fishing and agriculture, producing octopus, sea urchin, scallops, and melons. In the summer, many people visit for swimming at the beach.
