Engaru Town is a lush, green town with a vast area, located inland in the approximate center of the Okhotsk Subprefecture in northeastern Hokkaido. It was formed in 2005 through the merger of four municipalities: the towns of Ikutahara, Engaru, and Maruseppu, and the village of Shirataki. It borders many municipalities such as Mombetsu City and Kitami City, and has good access from Asahikawa City and Mombetsu Airport. Its urban functions are also well-developed, including a general hospital that supports regional medical care and commercial facilities.
The climate is characteristic of an inland region with very distinct seasonal changes: fresh green foliage and lingering snow in spring, refreshing deep green in summer, vibrant autumn colors, and a world of pure white snow in winter. The beautiful great outdoors, which lets you forget the hustle and bustle of the city amidst the slowly flowing time, is so rich that it has been designated as an "Ikimono Fureai no Sato" (A village for interacting with living things) by the Ministry of the Environment.
The town is divided into four unique areas where you can enjoy fishing for yamabe trout in clear streams, wooden toys, the vast "Ikoi no Mori" (Forest of Relaxation), and cross-country skiing with views of the Daisetsu mountains. Furthermore, it is a fascinating town full of unique historical and natural treasures, such as Ganbou-iwa Rock, a nationally designated Place of Scenic Beauty; Taiyo no Oka (Hill of the Sun), which boasts one of Japan's largest cosmos flower fields; and the forest railway steam locomotive "Amemiya 21," which is certified as a Hokkaido Heritage site.
