Meet Japan's largest butterbur and ancient fossils in Ashoro

Population:6,000
Ashoro is the town with the largest administrative area (1408.04 km²) among all towns and villages in Japan. National Routes 241 and 242, which connect the Kitami-Abashiri, Kushiro, and Tokachi regions, intersect in the center of the town, where the "Michi-no-Eki" Ashoro Ginga Hall 21 is located.
Set amidst abundant nature, the scenic spot "Onneto" lake beautifully reflects the colors of the changing seasons on its surface. The surrounding forests are among the most prominent natural forests in Hokkaido, holding a wealth of timber resources.
In the Rawan district, located in the eastern part of the town, grows the native "Rawan-buki," famous as "Japan's largest butterbur." It was designated as a "Hokkaido Heritage" site in October 2001. It is noted not only for its size, reaching 2-3 meters, but also as a healthy food ingredient, being less astringent than common wild butterbur, rich in minerals and dietary fiber, and containing polyphenols.
Additionally, at the Ashoro Museum of Paleontology in the town center, visitors can see skeletal exhibits of "Desmostylus" and "whales" that once inhabited the area. Fossil cleaning and mini-excavation experiences are also popular.
