Kushiro Wetlands and seafood nurtured by the cool summer sea fog

Population:18,400
Kushiro Town is a nature-rich town with a population of about 20,000, located in the southeastern part of Hokkaido. It is adjacent to Kushiro City, the hub of eastern Hokkaido, and is characterized by its wonderful location where you can enjoy the conveniences of a city while having vast, overwhelmingly scaled nature right at your doorstep.
The climate is cool throughout the year, and especially in summer, it is enveloped in a unique fog called "umigiri" (sea fog), so temperatures do not rise significantly. At Chihomanai, a weather observation point in the town, the average temperature in July is 15.5 degrees Celsius, creating a very cool and comfortable climate. This refreshing climate, which makes you forget the harsh, intense heat of Honshu, has become very popular in recent years as a summer retreat and a destination for long-term stays.
In the northern part of the town lies Kushiro Shitsugen National Park, Japan's largest wetland, where a rich ecosystem is protected, home to many globally rare plants and animals, including the red-crowned crane, a special natural monument of Japan. On the other hand, the southern part faces the majestic Pacific Ocean, where high-quality, nutrient-rich seafood, blessed by the cold current, is abundantly landed throughout the year. It is a charming town where you can experience the mystery of the magnificent wetlands and the bounty of the rich sea with all five senses.
