Kushiro Marshlands National Park
Kushiro Marshlands National Park consists of Japan's largest wetland, Kushiro Marsh, which hugs the Kushiro River and its tributaries, and the hills surrounding the wetland, and is a valuable habitat for many plants and animals, including the red-crowned crane, a national special natural treasure.
In 1980, Kushiro Marsh became the first wetland in Japan to be registered under the Ramsar Convention, and seven years later, in 1987, it was designated as the 28th national park in Japan.
The area is about 17 km east to west, 36 km north to south, and 28,788 hectares in total, and the panoramic view from the Hosooka Observatory is breathtaking.
