Tsurui: A Dairy Village Where Cranes Dance in Wetlands

Population:2,400
Tsurui Village, located in eastern Hokkaido, is a small community with a population of about 2,500. It is blessed with rich natural surroundings and includes part of Kushiro Shitsugen National Park, Japan’s largest wetland. Easily accessible, it is about a 40-minute drive from Kushiro City and serves as a gateway for eastern Hokkaido tourism.
With its inland climate, summers are cool and comfortable, while winters are cold with vast snowy landscapes. The scenery of the wetlands changes beautifully with the seasons, and in winter, the sight of red-crowned cranes dancing across the snow creates a magical atmosphere.
Dairy farming is the village’s main industry, producing high-quality milk used in award-winning cheeses. The natural cheese “Tsurui” has received national recognition. The village continues to develop tourism and industry while preserving its precious natural environment.
