Ashibetsu City is located at approximately 43 degrees north latitude and 142 degrees east longitude, near the center of Hokkaido. It spans 24.96 km from east to west and 48.65 km from north to south, with a total area of 865.04 km², making it one of the largest cities by area in Japan.
About 88% of its area is forest. The Sorachi River flows from southeast to northwest, and the region is blessed with abundant nature and distinct seasonal changes throughout the year.
Leveraging its natural environment, including beautiful scenery, clear skies, and a night sky sparkling with seemingly countless stars, the city aims to promote tourism focused on the infinite love and romance of the stars. It has been certified as a "Starry Sky Town" by the Ministry of the Environment. The catchphrase "Ashibetsu, the Village Where Stars Fall" is used in various contexts beyond tourism and has become widely recognized as the city's image.
The JR Nemuro Main Line runs through the city. Additionally, there are two national highways (Route 38 and Route 452) and eleven prefectural roads. The city is located at a point connecting major cities in Hokkaido, approximately 110 km from Sapporo, 40 km from Asahikawa, and 140 km from Obihiro.
