An agricultural town of melons and flowers, with the nature of Tsurunuma Park

Population:1,600
The development of Urausu Town began in Meiji 20 (1887) when the Kabato Shujikan (prison) constructed a road between Tsukigata and Teshio. In Meiji 32 (1899), it separated from what is now Tsukigata Town. It was established as a town in Showa 35 (1960) and celebrated its 100th anniversary in Heisei 11 (1999).
Originally developed as a purely agricultural village centered on rice cultivation, its agriculture has diversified due to agricultural policies, now including greenhouse crops. It has gained a high reputation in the market as a stable producer of quality and quantity of products like flowers, melons, and asparagus.
Blessed with natural resources such as lush greenery on gentle hills and quiet lakes, the area was designated as a "Nature Recreation Village" in Showa 48 (1973). The town has since started developing tourism and recreation facilities. To realize the "Town-wide Industrial Park Concept," it is working on creating tourism hubs that leverage its rich natural environment, starting with Tsurunuma Park, which has long been popular as a waterside park.
Located in the mid-western part of Hokkaido, almost in the center of the Sorachi subprefecture, the town has an area of 101.83 km². It is situated between the Kabato Mountains and the majestic Ishikari River, with a mostly flat terrain dotted with several rivers and marshes. The environment is ideal for agriculture with high temperatures and adequate rainfall, but it experiences heavy snowfall in winter, with an average annual snowfall of 8 to 9 meters.
