The "Hometown Products Bureau" is a place in Nanporo Town that many locals have used, but is not well known outside of the town. However, it is actually a little-known spot where you can enjoy a wonderful view and have a typical Nanporo lunch.
The Hometown Products Bureau, which opened in April 2000, is a "hub facility that provides information on tourism and products in Nanporo Town, and promotes local industries and revitalizes and encourages interaction in the region."
...This may sound quite serious, but there is also a bus shelter on the first floor, so it is a familiar facility for the local residents.
Looking at the exterior of the facility, the most distinctive feature is the cylindrical part that seems to protrude from the square building. At the top of this cylinder is the 5th floor observation deck, about 26 meters high, from which you can see the whole town. It's made of glass 360 degrees, so it feels very open and comfortable!
On a clear day, you can apparently see the ridgeline from Mt. Eniwa to Mt. Teine, making this a little-known spot.
Speaking of little-known spots, the Nanporo Town Tourist Association Snack Corner on the first floor is also worth checking out, as it offers dishes that make use of the region's unique characteristics! Let us introduce some recommended dishes.
The most popular noodle dish is the "Cabbage Kimchi Ramen" (470 yen including tax). Cabbage, a specialty of Nanporo Town, is made into kimchi and served on top of ramen, giving it an addictive, spicy flavor. Unlike Chinese cabbage kimchi, it has a slight sweetness to it, which makes it popular.
The most popular rice dish is the "Nanporo Jingisukan Rice Bowl Set" (570 yen including tax). This is a great value set that includes a bowl of Nanporo Jingisukan from Junya, a restaurant that has been popular in Nanporo town since 1964, cabbage kimchi, and miso soup. What's more, all the rice dishes on the menu are made with rice from Nanporo, so they're thorough!
The "Tamogi Curry Rice" (500 yen including tax) is also very popular. It contains "Tamogi mushrooms", which are a type of mushroom from the Oyster mushroom family. Tamogi mushrooms were originally rare, but a company in Nanporo Town developed and developed a method of artificial cultivation, which made it possible to supply them nationwide. It's quite an educational experience.
If you come to Nanporo Town and want to eat something that is unique to Nanporo, why not visit the Furusato Bussankan Bureau? And did you notice? All the menu items are very reasonably priced!
Being able to enjoy the scenery and have a lunch that's easy on the wallet will make you feel like you've discovered another charm of Nanporo Town.
