So Popular It's a LINE Sticker! Who is Shiroppi from Sapporo's Shiroishi Ward?
Did you know there's a local celebrity in Sapporo's Shiroishi Ward? It's Shiroppi, the official mascot of Shiroishi Ward. Hearing how adorable it was, I had to go see for myself.
After meeting the famous Shiroppi in person, I totally get it. With its pure white body and big, soulful eyes, it's just unbelievably cute!
Shiroppi was born in July 2008. The design, which was chosen through a public contest, is based on a snowman, inspired by the "shiro" (white) in Shiroishi, and roses, the official flower of the ward. And sure enough, it has a rose decoration on its head—quite a fashionista.
Besides being the official mascot of Shiroishi Ward, it also holds other important positions, such as the Special Chief for Promoting Neighborhood Association Membership and the Goodwill Ambassador for the Sapporo Convention Center. Shiroppi makes appearances at various events, so it seems to be quite a busy character.

But Shiroppi actually has a rival: the mischievous and a bit selfish "Kuroppi." You can see what Kuroppi looks like on the official website, so be sure to check it out. By the way, at the "Genki Cafe Blanc" on the first floor of the Shiroishi Ward Complex Government Building, you can find sweets and merchandise featuring both Shiroppi and Kuroppi.
What's more, this is the only place where you can buy the merchandise! This really adds to their rarity and appeal. There's a wide variety of items available, including pens and polo shirts, so be sure to take a look.
The more you look at Shiroppi, the cuter it gets, and it has a strangely soothing effect. I have a feeling it will soon break out of its role as a ward character and gain fans all across Hokkaido.
