Gyokusenkan Atochi Park in Iwamizawa: Enjoy a Moment of Elegance Among Autumn Leaves and Cherry Blossoms

Gyokusenkan Atochi Park in Iwamizawa was created by redeveloping the site that was once cherished as the garden of the hot spring inn, Gyokusenkan. The Gyokusenkan was a historic and prestigious inn that operated from 1904 to 1979.

When the inn closed, the garden was also shut down and eventually fell into disrepair. In the Heisei era, responding to requests from citizens who wished to see the pond utilized and the area restored in the style of a traditional Japanese garden, the city of Iwamizawa began developing the park.

Going back even further, the inn was originally built on this land because the indigenous Ainu people discovered a mineral spring here several hundred years ago. It is said that because of this, the entire area does not freeze over even in winter.

In 2001, the authentic tea house "Gyokusen-an" was completed, and in 2011, the park was selected as one of the "10 Treasures of Iwamizawa" by citizens in the "Iwamizawa Treasure Discovery and Promotion Project." Today, Gyokusenkan Atochi Park is a relaxing oasis and a "treasure" for the people of Iwamizawa.

At the center of the 17,500 square meter grounds is Shinji-ike Pond, which is literally shaped like the kanji character for "heart" (心). Surrounding it are about 1,800 trees that showcase different expressions with the changing seasons.

The best time to see the cherry blossoms is in early May, when the garden is dyed a pale pink. After these cherry blossoms fall, the weeping cherry tree behind the tea house comes into full bloom, which is also a spectacular sight.

From mid to late October, the autumn foliage is magnificent. As you stroll through the park enjoying these seasonal landscapes, you'll feel a sense of tranquility wash over you. Perhaps it's a quintessential landscape that resonates deeply with the Japanese spirit.

Please note that Gyokusenkan Atochi Park is open from April 29 to November 3 and is closed during the winter. Admission is free, and anyone can enter from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, although opening and closing times may vary by season.

The tea house can be used by anyone for tea ceremonies and photo shoots. However, an advance application is required, and the usage fee must be paid in advance. It's a very impressive and stately tea house, so if you're interested, please check the official website.

Benches and gazebos are placed throughout the park. When you're tired from walking or just want to relax, why not sit down and gaze at the surroundings? You can enjoy the timeless flow of history and a moment of elegance that has been passed down for centuries since the mineral spring was discovered here.
