You can see demons all over the Noboribetsu hot spring town. These demons are called "Yukijin" and are said to burn away misfortune and bring good health and fortune. In this article, we will introduce some of the unique Yukijin that lurk all over the Noboribetsu hot spring town!

SPOT 1 Welcoming Demon Statue (in front of JR Noboribetsu Station)

First, they welcome tourists in front of JR Noboribetsu Station. They then make an appearance as entertainers at the Noboribetsu Hell Festival, held in the Noboribetsu hot spring resort town on the last Saturday and Sunday of August every year, and liven up the festival.

The demon statue with its hands folded is one that is holding a metal club with the words "prosperity in business" written on it. It is a "beckoning demon" rather than a "beckoning cat" and seems to bring great luck.

Located next to the Noboribetsu Tourist Association on Gokuraku Street is Yukake Onikura. Use a ladle to pour the hot spring water flowing from the side onto any part of your body that hurts, and pray for good health and recovery from all illnesses through the hot spring's healing properties.

The "Enma Daio Karakuri Float," created as a commemorative project for the 30th Noboribetsu Hell Festival, is enshrined here, and you can see Karakuri performances six times a day. At the Noboribetsu Hell Festival, you can enjoy watching this Enma Daio parade through the hot spring town.

It's a popular spot for taking commemorative photos. In the small shrine in the center of the 3.5m standing red demon statue and the 2.2m seated blue demon statue, a "Nenbutsu Oni Statue" (a statue of a Buddhist chanting demon) that is said to have been handed down since the Edo period is enshrined.

When talking about Noboribetsu Onsen town, you can't miss the popular Jigokudani and Sengen Park where you can see the geysers, but why not take a leisurely stroll through the town and look for the Yukijin?
