Fashion with Gratitude: AKAN LEATHER's Commitment to Hokkaido's Ezo Deer Leather
"Itadakimasu" is a Japanese phrase that expresses gratitude for the life of the food that one is about to receive, and respect for everyone involved in bringing it to the table. Based at Lake Akan in eastern Hokkaido, the brand AKAN LEATHER has created a line of apparel with the hope that people will "bring the spirit of 'itadakimasu' to what they wear."
Stop the Waste! The Incredible Qualities of Ezo Deer Leather
The population of Ezo sika deer in Hokkaido has been increasing year by year, causing damage to agriculture, forestry, and creating traffic hazards. As a result, many of these deer are culled to control their numbers, and most of their hides are disposed of as industrial waste. AKAN LEATHER was founded to make use of these discarded Ezo deer hides instead of letting them go to waste.
In fact, deerskin is highly valued worldwide. It is rich in natural oils and exceptionally durable. It's soft and supple, yet remarkably strong. Furthermore, it has moisture-wicking properties, making it breathable and resistant to stuffiness, earning it the nickname "the silk of the leather world." Deerskin has been used in Japan for over 1,300 years, and it is said that about 80% of the leather goods in the Shosoin Repository at Todai-ji Temple are made from deerskin!

The key visual features Ainu artist Hideo Akibe and imma, Asia's first virtual human, who is known for her love for the earth and animals and has a global following.
Cool Designs by Kenta Takaya, Head of the Kansai Yamamoto Design Office
The newly announced "AKAN LEATHER Flagship Model ALK Series" was designed and produced by Kenta Takaya, a designer and the head of the design office of the late, world-renowned Japanese fashion designer Kansai Yamamoto. Hideo Akibe, an Ainu artist living in Lake Akan, served as an advisor for the project.

Perfect for both men and women. The ALK001 will be available for pre-order on the e-commerce site starting at the end of March 2023, with a limited run of 5 jackets per size (36, 38, 40, 42, 44).
While it's a simple double riders jacket, the facing features an Ainu pattern, the symbol of AKAN LEATHER. Taking advantage of the light and soft characteristics of deerskin, the jacket conforms to the wearer's body and can be worn casually in both urban and natural settings.
Designer Kenta Takaya, who designed and produced the collection, says:
Working in the world of fashion, I have witnessed the complex situation surrounding the leather industry due to diverse perspectives on SDGs and animal welfare. Amidst this, I believe that the values our ancestors have cherished since long before the term SDGs was coined—dating back to the Jomon period—such as 'gratitude for nature' and 'a sense of awe and reverence,' are reflected in Japan's leather industry.
Honestly, I still don't know what the right answer is, but I deeply resonate with the philosophy of AKAN LEATHER: 'to use the lives we have received with care' and 'wearing this contributes to forest conservation.'
I hope that through this brand, as many people as possible will visit Hokkaido, learn about the Ezo deer issue in the region, and be inspired to think about it.
AKAN LEATHER plans to open a store in Akanko Onsen 4-chome around Golden Week in 2023. We can't take our eyes off their exciting future developments. Be sure to check them out.
