"What are snow bugs?" "When snow bugs fly does the first snow fall?" Mysteries of snow bugs that even Hokkaido residents don't know
Is it true that "when snow bugs fly, the first snow will fall"?
In Hokkaido, it is said that "when snow bugs fly, the first snow will fall," but is this really true? In Hokkaido, the adult Todononeowawatmushi insects migrate to Mandarin orange trees around October. Meanwhile, the first snow in Hokkaido is said to fall on November 1st in Sapporo, and on October 19th in Wakkanai and Asahikawa, the earliest in Hokkaido (average values according to the Sapporo Regional Meteorological Observatory).
In other words, the timing is perfect, with the aphids starting to fly and then the first snow falling.
The Todonooneowata aphid has a generally weak flying ability and sways back and forth as it flies, making it look like snow, which is why it has come to be known as the "snow bug."
This sight makes us feel the beginning of Hokkaido's long winter.
