The Former Hakodate Ward Public Hall is a masterpiece of Western-style architecture from the Meiji period, built in 1910. After undergoing extensive preservation repairs in 2021, it has been restored to its original appearance. This building, designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan, features a design that blends Japanese and Western styles, and the VIP room on the second floor has a luxurious interior that has even been used by members of the imperial family.

3. Mount Hakodate Observatory (Mount Hakodate Ropeway)

Hakodateyama Observatory is a spot that attracts all visitors, offering a magnificent view of Hakodate city and its surroundings. It takes just three minutes to reach the observatory from the ground via an aerial ride on the ropeway. From the rooftop observation deck, you can see the city of Hakodate, the Tsugaru Strait, and the beauty of Mt. Hakodate in all four seasons, and the night view is known as the "million dollar night view" for its beauty.

The first floor of the observation deck is where the summit station and waiting lobby are located, while you can enjoy the views while enjoying food and drinks at the restaurant on the second floor and the tea lounge on the third floor.

4. Goryokaku Park

Goryokaku Park

Goryokaku Park is known as the site of the final battle of the Boshin War, the Battle of Hakodate, and was the last stronghold of the former Shogunate army led by Enomoto Takeaki and Hijikata Toshizo. The park is called Goryokaku because of its pentagonal star-shaped exterior. In spring, the park is decorated with about 1,530 flowers, including cherry blossoms, and is bustling with citizens during long holidays. In particular, the "flower raft" is a moving sight for visitors, with cherry blossom petals scattered in the moat covering the water's surface.

The restored Hakodate Magistrate's Office is also one of the highlights, and the park also has a promenade that is perfect for strolling and relaxation.

5. Goryokaku Tower

Goryokaku Tower is a symbol of Hakodate, offering a panoramic view of the star-shaped Goryokaku fortress. Since the first tower was built in 1964, it has progressed alongside the history of the region, and in 2006 a taller, more modern 107-meter tower was built. From Goryokaku Tower, you can enjoy magnificent views of Mt. Hakodate, the Tsugaru Strait, and the changing scenery of the seasons.

The observation deck is designed in a pentagon, and the Goryokaku History Corridor, where you can learn more about Goryokaku's history, and the See-Through Floor, where you can see down through the reinforced glass floor, are popular with tourists.

6. Hokkaido Toshogu Shrine

Hokkaido Toshogu Shrine

Within the grounds, visitors can learn about the shrine's history through a water basin that still bears bullet holes from the Hakodate War, and stone lions that were damaged in the Great Hakodate Fire of 1934. The shrine building was burned down during the Hakodate War, and the deity that barely survived was moved around the city several times before being moved to its current location in 1992 and given its current name.

7. Hakodate City Tram Yunokawa Stop

Hakodate City Tram

The Hakodate City Tram has a history of over 100 years since it began operation in 1913. It opened as the first horse-drawn railway north of Tokyo, and was electrified in response to requests from residents, after which it has undergone numerous changes to reach the present day. It is popular not only with locals but also with tourists, and its retro appearance adds color to the streets of Hakodate.

The Yunokawa stop is located at the entrance to Yunokawa Onsen, known as one of the best hot spring areas in southern Hokkaido, and we recommend taking a stroll around the area. Along with the tram, you can enjoy a tasteful trip to Hakodate's hot springs.

8. Hachimanzaka

It was named after the fact that Hakodate Hachiman Shrine was said to have been located at the top of the hill long ago, and it is popular as one of Hakodate's most famous view spots. This slope leads from the Red Brick Warehouses to Mount Hakodate, and the view from below Hakodate Nishi High School at the end of the slope is spectacular.

During the winter "Hakodate Illumination" period, the street trees and cobblestones are beautifully lit up, allowing you to experience different charms depending on the season.
