What to Wear and How to Walk to Comfortably Enjoy the Sapporo Snow Festival

*Image is for illustrative purposes.

February, when the Sapporo Snow Festival is held, is the coldest time of the year in Hokkaido. Here are some key tips on what to wear and how to walk, from staying warm to choosing the right shoes and learning how to walk on slippery surfaces—everything you need to know before your trip to enjoy the Snow Festival to the fullest.

Choosing the Right Footwear is Crucial! Recommended and Unsuitable Shoes

The Snow Festival sites and busy city streets can be extremely slippery, with snow packed down into slick ice or the presence of "black ice," which looks merely wet but is actually frozen.

■Recommended Footwear
・Winter shoes or snow boots with anti-slip soles
・Shoes with rubber soles and deep grooves

■Footwear to Avoid
・Regular sneakers
・Leather shoes, loafers
・Shoes with heels, platform shoes

If you don't own winter shoes, we recommend strap-on anti-slip cleats, which can be purchased for around 1,000 yen at New Chitose Airport and convenience stores in Hokkaido.

The Trick to Not Falling is the "Penguin Walk"! How to Walk Safely on Snowy Roads

No matter how good your shoes are, you can still fall if you don't walk correctly. On slippery roads, walk safely using the "penguin walk," a familiar technique in Hokkaido.

■The Secret to Walking on Winter Roads! Three Key Points of the "Penguin Walk"
・Take small steps
・Place your entire foot flat on the ground, shuffling slightly
・Lean your center of gravity slightly forward

Walking while looking at your smartphone or with your hands in your pockets is dangerous anytime, but you should absolutely avoid it on snowy roads.

Stay Warm This Winter! A Checklist for Clothing and Items

To enjoy the Snow Festival and other outdoor sightseeing for extended periods in the cold, it's essential to keep your body warm. These items are not only for protection against the cold but also to reduce the risk of injury if you fall.

■Winter in Hokkaido: What to Bring Checklist
・Gloves (for warmth + injury prevention in case of a fall)
・Knit hat or earmuffs (for warmth + a hat protects your head in a fall)
・Waterproof outerwear
・A backpack or shoulder bag to keep your hands free
・Strap-on anti-slip cleats (if you have them)

Check these tips on what to wear and how to walk to enjoy the Sapporo Snow Festival and your winter sightseeing in Sapporo and Hokkaido safely and securely.
