Mori Town

Morimachi, located in southern Hokkaido, is known as the birthplace of the famous ekiben "ikameshi" (squid rice), and is a treasure trove of seafood caught in Funka Bay. Kouki Ogawa, who lives in Morimachi, is the successor to the "Dounan Sugi Canoe" technique, which is made using "Dounan Sugi" (Dounan cedar) grown in southern Hokkaido. We asked Ogawa about the "special things" of Morimachi.

The man himself is on the left in the photo. On the right is Koichi Akita, who runs the "Akita Canoe Workshop" in Morimachi.

He is a local revitalization volunteer in Morimachi, located near Hakodate, Hokkaido. He is the successor to the Dounan Sugi Canoe technique and was the first winner of the Local Revitalization Cooperation Volunteer Crowdfunding Award. He is skilled in creating local spaces and wood education, making use of his practical experience in downstream forestry such as architectural design and woodworking. He runs the town-run woodworking facility "iroMori" and the local community space "Yamaumi Base" that he created with his friends in Morimachi, while working towards a "town without a university, where there are university students 365 days a year."
