A Truly Unique Texture and Flavor!? Discover Ishikari's Famous "Kuzu Bar"

Have you heard of a product that was launched in 2017 at a certain confectionery shop, gradually became a hot topic in the local Ishikari area, and is now a popular item known to those in the know?

It's called the "Kuzu Bar."
Its slightly unusual name and colorful, popsicle-like appearance are captivating. However, it's said to be completely different from a popsicle. Let's uncover the truth.

They are sold at "Wagashi no Nakamura," a shop that was founded in Ashibetsu in 1945 and has been operating for nearly half a century since relocating to the current Ishikari City. The charming red storefront gives it the perfect confectionery shop atmosphere.
The colorful Kuzu Bars are stored and sold in a freezer inside the shop. Their appearance might make you wonder, "How are they different from popsicles?" But you'll be amazed when you try one! It's a completely new sensation. It has a springy, jelly-like texture and lacks the sharp, brain-freezing cold of a typical popsicle. Of course, it's perfectly cold, but it's gentle on the teeth with a pleasant texture.
The secret behind the Kuzu Bar is actually kuzu powder (arrowroot starch). It's made by heating and dissolving kuzu powder and granulated sugar with water, then adding various fruit juices. Like its texture, it features the gentle sweetness of natural fruit juice. With flavors like strawberry, blueberry, mango, and white peach, plus seasonal options, you might have a hard time choosing. By the way, lemon and orange have been available as seasonal flavors since May 1, 2021, so be sure to check them out (the photo below is of the orange flavor).
One bar costs 180 yen (tax included). While it's delicious eaten frozen from the freezer, it's said that you can enjoy a different sensation by eating it melted. In any case, the Kuzu Bar offers a satisfying experience you can't get anywhere else, so why not give it a try? If you bring it as a gift, it's sure to be a delightful surprise.
