Do you know what it is that was released at a certain Japanese and Western confectionery shop in 2017, gradually became a hot topic in the local Ishikari area, and is now a popular item known only to those in the know?
It's called "Kuzu Bar."
The slightly strange name and colorful appearance that looks just like a popsicle are appealing. However, it is actually something completely different from a popsicle. Let's find out the truth.
The sweets on sale are from Nakamura Japanese and Western Confectionery, which was founded in Ashibetsu in 1945 and has been in business for nearly half a century since moving to its current location in Ishikari City. The shop has a cute red interior and a typical sweets shop atmosphere.
The colorful Kuzu bars are stored in the freezer inside the store and are sold there. From their appearance, you might wonder, "How is this different from a popsicle?" But when you try them, you'll be surprised! It's a completely new sensation. They have a bouncy texture and don't have the harsh sensation of regular popsicles. Of course, they are cold, but they don't soothe your teeth and have a gentle texture.
The real identity of Kuzu Bars is actually kuzu flour. They are made by boiling kuzu flour and granulated sugar with water until dissolved, then adding various fruit juices. Like the texture, they are characterized by the gentle sweetness of natural fruit juices. In addition to strawberry, blueberry, mango, white peach, and other flavors, there are also seasonal flavors, so it may be difficult to choose. By the way, from May 1, 2021, lemon and orange flavors will be on sale as seasonal flavors, so be sure to check them out (the photo below shows the orange).
The price is 180 yen (tax included) per bar. It's delicious when chilled in the freezer, but it also has a different feel when melted. Either way, Kuzu Bars have a satisfying taste that can only be found at Kuzu Bars, so why not give them a try? Bringing them as a gift is sure to surprise and delight anyone.
