Romantic Night Views! Discover Arashiyama Observation Deck Overlooking Asahikawa

When you think of visiting Asahikawa, what comes to mind? For many, it's Asahikawa Ramen or the Asahiyama Zoo. But we'd like to add another fantastic spot to your list: the Arashiyama Observation Deck.

The view from the observatory is simply outstanding, and the breeze makes it an incredibly pleasant place to be.
Let's step into a spot that's not widely known, except to the locals.
Arashiyama Park, home to the observation deck, was established in 1965 as a recreational area for citizens. A reinforced concrete observatory was built in 1966, and it was replaced with the current structure in 2004.
The scenery from the deck is exceptional, offering a panoramic view of Asahikawa's city center. Look to the southeast, and you can see the meandering Ishikari River. Turn to the northeast, and a pastoral landscape of rice fields unfolds before you. At night, you can enjoy both the city lights and the starry sky, creating a truly luxurious and romantic atmosphere.
The observation deck is about a 500-meter walk from the parking lot along a well-maintained promenade, making it easily accessible for everyone. However, if you're visiting for the night view, be aware that there are no lights, so bringing a flashlight is a must. Also, please note that the path is not cleared of snow during the winter.
By the way, "Arashiyama" is famously a district in Kyoto. So why is this area in Asahikawa called "Arashiyama"? The story goes back to the Meiji era. The prevailing theory is that the view of the Ishikari River and the Daisetsuzan Mountains from the summit resembled the view of the Kamo River and Mount Hiei from the top of Kyoto's Arashiyama.

Incidentally, "Arashiyama and the View from Arashiyama" has been selected as one of the "Eight Views of Asahikawa." Arashiyama Park and its observation deck are popular destinations for local kindergarten and elementary school field trips. Why not take a moment during your trip to enjoy a piece of the scenery that locals have cherished for generations?
