These photos were taken by Sachiko Tsuchiya, who works as a nursery school teacher and photographs wildlife across Hokkaido in her spare time. The pictures were taken in the Daisetsuzan mountains around the summer of 2023. Ms. Tsuchiya shared her experience of that day:

"Ezo stoats are said to live above the tree line, at altitudes of 1,500 meters or more. I've been climbing the Daisetsuzan mountains to photograph wildlife for 10 years, and it's overwhelmingly rare to see them. But on this occasion, I encountered a family of stoats."

"They move so quickly, popping their heads up from all over like a game of whack-a-mole, which made them difficult to photograph. However, I was able to capture moments of a parent feeding its young and a curious kit staring at me with great interest."

"The mountains in Hokkaido are still covered in snow, but the climbing season will begin soon. I'm already excited to see what wildlife encounters this year will bring," Ms. Tsuchiya said. As Hokkaido's mountains enter the lush green season, there may be many opportunities to meet various wild animals.
