"I've never seen a herd this large" - Photographer Amazed by the Nearly 100 Ezo Deer
Here are some other photos taken by Emi Kikuchi
The photographer behind this shot is Emi Kikuchi, who has been capturing the nature, landscapes, and wildlife of Hokkaido. She took the photo on June 24, 2026, in Tomakomai City. She described the moment as follows:
"Herds of deer are not unusual in Tomakomai, but my personal record within the city was seeing a total of 50 deer over 30 minutes while moving, and the most I'd ever captured in a single photo was just under 30. I had never seen a herd of this size before." (Emi Kikuchi)
While the sight of adorable fawns is heartwarming, Ezo deer are also a major issue in various parts of Hokkaido, causing traffic accidents and damage to agricultural crops.
When I visited the same spot on June 26, the herd was still there.
They also made a surprise appearance at a tourist ranch.
The sight of nearly 100 Ezo deer gathered in one place is a precious scene that can only be encountered in the rich nature of Hokkaido. At the same time, it reminds us of the challenges of coexistence between humans and wildlife. This single photograph tells a profound story about the richness of nature and the proximity of wildlife—a truly Hokkaido-esque landscape.
