Exhilarating view over the city! Work up a nice sweat climbing Mt!
The word "mountain climbing" may sound daunting, but if it is not snow season, you can easily climb the mountain even with sneakers. Of course, it is also recommended for those who do not live in Sapporo. Instead of spending your holiday in idleness, get a good sweat on and refresh yourself!
Maruyama is 225.4 meters above sea level, and there are two courses to climb up the mountain: the 88 Places Course and the Zoo Course, both of which take about 30 to 40 minutes, depending on the individual. First, take the Tozai Line subway from Maruyama Koen Station and head in the direction of Maruyama Zoo. Then you will see the following signboard near the entrance to Maruyama Primeval Forest.
As the sign says "Sapporo Peripheral Nature Trail," it is considered a "nature trail" rather than a "mountain trail" because climbing Maruyama is not that difficult. The "88 Places Course" (approx. 1 km) enters the mountain from the Daishido Hall located just behind the signboard to the left, and the "Zoo Course" (approx. 0.7 km) to the right has an entrance about 1 km further from here.
Some neighbors seem to climb this course every day, as it is not too steep and can be climbed easily.
However, you must not let your guard down. Be sure to hydrate properly and take into account your own physical condition as you proceed. In winter, we also recommend that you wear good snow shoes. If you do so, the beauty and richness of nature that is unique to the season will surely be waiting for you.
Occasionally, you may come across cute little animals such as Ezo squirrels and chipmunks, as well as birds with distinctive calls.
When you begin to sweat after taking a full-out forest bath, the summit will finally come into view. The exhilaration of looking down on the city of Sapporo from above is a privilege that only those who have climbed to the top can enjoy. Enjoy the view to your heart's content and let the fatigue and stress of daily life disappear!
