There are many beautiful waterfalls in Sapporo. Among them, Takino Suzuran Hillside Park, the only national park in Hokkaido, has an astonishing four waterfalls, one of which has been selected as one of the 100 best waterfalls in Japan. This time we will introduce one of the four waterfalls in Takino Suzuran Hillside Park, Masumi Falls. Why not go for a walk and cool off? The national Takino Suzuran Hillside Park covers an area of 400 hectares, and within this vast area you can see four waterfalls. They are Ashiribetsu Falls, which has been selected as one of the 100 best waterfalls in Japan, Fudo Falls (currently closed to the public due to damage caused by heavy rains), Shiraho Falls, and Masumi Falls, which we will introduce here. Masumi Falls is a very attractive waterfall, and some people say they prefer it to Ashiribetsu Falls. The name Masumi Falls is said to come from an anecdote in which a trout coming up the river reached this waterfall, but gave up, thinking it was impossible to go up, and just looked up. It has a drop of 18m and a width of 20m. It is a very elegant waterfall that spreads out gently along the smooth rock surface. It is easy to see why it is so divided in opinion between this waterfall and the more impressive Ashiribetsu Falls. Looking at Masumi Falls from the front, you can see that it splits into two parts, the left and right. The flow on the left side is sometimes stronger, and sometimes the right side is sometimes stronger, so it looks different depending on the season, which is another part of its charm. Now, within the vast Takino Suzuran Hillside Park, the closest parking lot to Masumi Falls is the Masumiguchi Parking Lot (paid). The waterfall you are looking for is about 700m away from there. Even if you walk slowly along the promenade while admiring the surrounding nature, you will arrive in about 15 minutes. You can get so close that you can feel the spray of the water, so it's perfect for people who want to experience negative ions and refresh their mind and body.
