Have you heard about Sapporo Rainbow Pride, an organization in Sapporo, Hokkaido, which is working toward the realization of a society where everyone can live their own life?

Originally, it was a 17-year-long LGBT (*LGBT is an acronym for gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender/transsexual, but this organization interprets the term to include other sexual minorities [asexual, X-gender, queer, etc.]) parade that began in 1996 and has continued for the past 17 years, (The term is interpreted and used to include other sexual minorities [asexual, X-gender, queer, non-binary, queer, etc.]).

The first "Sapporo Rainbow Pride 2018" was held the following year in 2018. Last year, 340 people took part in the parade, again under the circumstances of the coronary disaster, and after taking measures to prevent infection. And in 2021, the event was scheduled to be held on September 19, but due to the impact of the new coronavirus, it will be scaled down and held mainly as an online project.

For this interview, we spoke with Teruko Mitsushima, deputy executive committee chairperson of the Sapporo Rainbow Pride Executive Committee, which is active in communicating the presence of LGBT people in the city and "realizing a society where anyone with various difficulties can live as themselves" as well as LGBT people.

Teruko Mitsushima, Deputy Executive Committee Chair of the Sapporo Rainbow Pride Executive Committee

This year is actually a commemorative year, marking 25 years since the first parade was held in Sapporo. The entire executive committee has been working hard all year to prepare for the event, hoping to celebrate this history with as much pomp and circumstance as possible. Unfortunately, in light of the spread of the coronavirus in 2021, Sapporo Rainbow Pride has decided to deliver the event mainly through online planning. We have considered this until the very last minute, and therefore feel frustrated, but we now want to believe that doing something in the name of a "parade" is something that will bring a little hope to the LGBT community.

A parade in which sexual minority parties walk the streets and appeal to society for their existence. Since the time of our predecessors, Sapporo's parade has always been about "partying," and while the number of people who know the word LGBT is increasing and it is becoming more and more visible in the media, the fact that such parties have a place everywhere and next to everyone and are in fact alive, In fact, I don't think it is properly understood. Sapporo Rainbow Pride will continue to focus its efforts on creating an environment and a chance for those involved and allies to join hands with each other, while appealing to society to make gender and sexuality issues "something close to everyone's heart and something that is personal.

First of all, we are looking forward to meeting you all on September 19 (Sunday) on the official YouTube channel of Sapporo Rainbow Pride! We hope that as many people as possible will be able to watch the video!

This year, 2021, the event will be held mainly online, but they are continuing to prepare for the event, saying that they want it to be an event where people celebrate each other's differences, just as they are. We encourage everyone to support and participate in your own way.
