In the heart of winter, temperatures at Akanko Onsen often drop below -20°C. But it's these frigid conditions that create such breathtakingly beautiful scenery.

Sledding on a beautiful, sunny day. My relative's child was having a blast holding on tight to the sled, but I have to admit, the person pulling it looked like they were having a tough time! (lol)

This is the annual New Year's horseback shrine visit at Hakodate Hachimangu Shrine. It was a powerful sight to see a rider in Yabusame (horseback archery) attire on a native Dosanko horse charge up the 134 steep stone steps to the shrine grounds.
