In the dead of winter, temperatures at Akanko Onsen often drop below -20°C. This extreme cold is precisely what creates such breathtakingly beautiful scenery.

Sledding on a beautifully clear day. My relative's child was having a blast holding on tight to the sled, but the person pulling it seemed to be having a much tougher time! (laughs)

This is the annual New Year's horseback shrine visit at Hakodate Hachimangu Shrine. It was a powerful sight to see a rider in Yabusame (horseback archery) attire on a native Dosanko horse charge up the 134 steep stone steps to the shrine grounds.
