Rusutsu Onsen: Enjoy a Free-Flowing Hot Spring for Just 300 Yen, a Beloved Spot for Villagers
On the way from Sapporo City, after crossing Nakayama Pass and heading towards Lake Toya, a curious sign catches the eye. Standing alone in a field, the sign reads "Rusutsu Onsen." Is there really a hot spring in a place like this? Feeling a bit uncertain, I follow the arrow...
Soon, a building with a triangular roof comes into view. There it is, it really exists! This is the Rusutsu Onsen we're introducing today. It even has a proper parking lot.
This facility was originally built as a village facility in the year 2000. At the time, Rusutsu Village didn't even have a public bathhouse (sento), so this onsen was created with the hope of promoting the health of the villagers and providing them with a place to relax and socialize. For this reason, there are no open-air baths or saunas. However, one thing is certain: you can enjoy a wonderful hot spring with water flowing directly from the source (gensen kakenagashi).
The water quality is a Sodium - Chloride/Bicarbonate Spring (hypotonic, slightly alkaline, high-temperature spring). It is known for its translucent, smooth water, which is not overly hot, allowing for long, relaxing soaks. Since the facility was built to promote the health of the villagers, the initial prices were set low. Thanks to this, even the general public can use it for the affordable price of 300 yen. (※As of October 2021)
The interior, which makes generous use of wood, has a comforting atmosphere, and by the time you leave, you'll realize you've been completely healed in both mind and body. If you happen to be passing by, you'll surely want to stop in again... It's the kind of onsen that leaves you with that feeling.
