SPOT 3 The great northern river, Teshio River

Midwinter

The Teshio River is a rare pristine river in Japan and a Hokkaido Heritage Site. The surface of the river freezes over in the cold of the midwinter, and in spring the dynamic sight of the blocks of snow and ice moving like drift ice is a must-see. Many people enjoy canoeing through the gentle flow of the river and the natural surroundings. The river faces the "Place where Hokkaido was named," which is said to have been devised by Matsuura Takeshiro, an explorer from the late Edo and Meiji periods, and is one of the famous spots.
