Tokachi Scenic Byway Tokachi Plain/Foothills Route

Located in the northwestern part of the vast Tokachi Plain, this route runs around the foothills of Mount Daisetsu and the Hidaka Mountains. In order to clearly distinguish this area from other areas in the Tokachi region, the name of the route combines "Tokachi Plain," which expresses regionality and grandeur, with "mountain foot," which evokes the image of deep forests.

1 Matsumi Ohashi Bridge: An outstanding road

Mikuni Pass on National Route 273 is the highest pass in Hokkaido, and is a spectacular spot with a view of the mountains in the distance and the vast sea of trees below. Matsumi Ohashi Bridge is a beautiful bridge that appears to be floating in the sky in this sea of trees. On a clear autumn day in Tokachi, why not take a drive through the colorful virgin forest from the refreshing birch trees of Tokachi Mitsumata to the observation deck where Mikuni Pass Café is located?

2 <Scenic Cafe> YORKSHIRE FARM

At Yorkshire Farm, about 200 sheep graze on a 10-hectare sheep farm. From July, beautiful climbing roses begin to bloom in the English-style Western-style house, where you can also stay overnight. You can enjoy your meal while watching the sheep and the garden from the terrace seats. We recommend dishes made with home-raised lamb and local ingredients from Shintoku Town. There are plenty of delicious options, including venison, locally made cheese, and the specialty log-grown shiitake mushrooms.

3 Lake Shikaribetsu

Located at an altitude of 810m, this is the highest lake in Hokkaido and the only natural lake in Daisetsuzan National Park. It is surrounded by virgin forest and is home to precious wildlife such as the Japanese pika, which is said to have lived here since the ice age. In the summer, it is a popular spot with a wide variety of activities such as Canadian canoeing and air trips. There is also accommodation next door, so why not stay overnight?

4 Mitatsu Panorama Park

Mitatsuru Panorama Park is an observation deck that offers an impressive view of the vast rural landscape of Tokachi with the Hidaka Mountains in the background. It is used as a viewpoint parking lot and as a place for travelers and business people to take a break. The sunsets seen from here are so beautiful that you will lose track of time as you gaze upon them. Another highlight is being able to see the scenery of the Hidaka Mountains in all four seasons.

5 <Scenic Cafe> Mikuni Pass Café

Mikuni Pass connects the Kamikawa area with Kamishihoro Town and Nukabira Onsenkyo in Tokachi. This log cabin scenic cafe allows you to enjoy the magnificent natural scenery. The owner's hand-dripped coffee made with home-roasted beans and cute latte art are popular, and the hearty curry rice is also recommended. The cafe also sells miscellaneous goods made by artists from Tokachi, making it a great place to relax and enjoy your time!
