Discover the Charm of Bricks and Pottery! A Visit to the Ceramic Art Center in Ebetsu, the Town of Bricks
The Ceramic Art Center is located right next to Nopporo Forest Park. The beautifully designed building stands in a spacious and pleasant setting.
The center is mainly divided into the "Northern Ceramics Exhibition Room," the "Shinobu Komori Memorial Room," and the "Brick Museum Exhibition Room." You can freely explore these with an admission fee of 300 yen (for high school students and older / 150 yen for elementary and junior high school students).
By the way, if you take the stairs from the second to the fourth floor, you'll reach the room with the highest triangular roof visible from the outside. It's an observation tower offering a 360-degree panoramic view, where you can see the vast natural environment around Ebetsu, including the Nopporo Primeval Forest and Mount Tarumae.
After enjoying the view, let's explore the center. First, the "Northern Ceramics Exhibition Room." A collection of neatly arranged works welcomes you with a serene atmosphere.
All the works on display are from kilns currently active in Hokkaido. You could easily lose track of time as you admire each unique piece of pottery created by contemporary artists.
In the "Shinobu Komori Memorial Room," you can trace the footsteps of Mr. Shinobu Komori, who is credited with making significant contributions to the development of the ceramics industry and pottery both within and outside of Hokkaido.
Born in Osaka in 1889, Mr. Komori moved from place to place before passing away in Ebetsu in 1962. His tumultuous life and passion for pottery are powerfully conveyed through his works.
Now, after viewing various ceramic works, the "Brick Museum Exhibition Room" offers a completely different atmosphere. Hokkaido's red brick production is said to have started in the late Edo period. Production in Ebetsu began around 1890, and the city eventually grew into a major brick manufacturing center.
Even today, Ebetsu bricks are widely used in places like Sapporo Kita 3-jo Plaza "Akapla" and the ballpark in Kitahiroshima City, scheduled to open in 2023.
Here, you can learn about the history of red brick production through creatively designed exhibits, including a diorama of a climbing kiln, as well as actual historical materials like precious Meiji-era bricks and production tools. It's a great stop not only for tourists but also for locals living around Ebetsu, like residents of Sapporo, who might want to drop by on a weekend drive.
There are also group pottery classes for parents and children, so be sure to check the official website if you're interested.
