While you're sightseeing, why not experience the unique local artistic atmosphere? The Ceramic Art Center in Ebetsu City is a facility where you can do just that. Although it's not a tourist spot, you may be able to get to know Ebetsu on a deeper level.
The Ceramic Art Center is located right next to Nopporo Forest Park. It is a spacious and pleasant facility with a beautiful exterior.
The museum is mainly divided into the "Northern Ceramics Exhibition Room," the "Komori Shinobu Memorial Room," and the "Brick Materials Exhibition Room." Admission is 300 yen (high school students and above, 150 yen for elementary and junior high school students) and you can freely browse the museum.
By the way, if you go up the stairs from the second floor to the fourth floor of the building, you will reach the tallest room with a triangular roof that can be seen from the outside. It is a watchtower with a 360-degree view, and you can see the natural environment around Ebetsu, such as Nopporo Primeval Forest and Mount Tarumae.
Once you've enjoyed the view, you can begin your stroll through the museum. Start with the "Northern Ceramics Exhibition Room." The neatly arranged works of art welcome you in a tranquil atmosphere.
All the works on display are from kilns currently active in Hokkaido. Just looking at each of the unique pieces of pottery by these active artists is enough to make you lose track of time.
In the "Komori Shinobu Memorial Room," you can follow in the footsteps of Komori Shinobu, who is said to have made a major contribution to the development of pottery and ceramics both in Hokkaido and abroad.
Komori was born in Osaka in 1889, and moved around from place to place until his death in Ebetsu in 1962. His turbulent life and passion for pottery are conveyed to the viewer through his works.
Now that we have seen various ceramic works, the atmosphere changes completely in the "Brick Materials Exhibition Room." Red brick production in Hokkaido is said to have begun at the end of the Edo period. It also began in Ebetsu around 1890, and eventually developed into a major brick production area.
Even today, Ebetsu bricks are widely used in buildings such as Akapla at Kita 3-jo Plaza in Sapporo and the ballpark in Kitahiroshima city that is scheduled to open in 2023.
Here, you can learn about the history of red brick production through ingenious exhibits such as precious bricks from the Meiji period, production tools, and other actual materials, as well as a diorama of a climbing kiln. Not only tourists, but also locals living around Ebetsu, such as Sapporo residents, should stop by on their weekend drives.
There are also group pottery classes that parents and children can participate in, so if you're interested, be sure to check out the official website.
