The fascination of bricks and pottery! Ceramic Art Center" in Ebetsu City, the City of Bricks
The Ceramic Art Center is located near Nopporo Forest Park. The beautiful exterior of the facility stands in a spacious and very pleasant place.
The museum is mainly divided into the "Northern Ceramics Exhibition Room," "Shinobu Komori Memorial Room," and "Brick Materials Exhibition Room. Visitors can freely tour the museum for an admission fee of 300 yen (high school students and older / 150 yen for elementary and junior high school students).
By the way, if you go up the stairs from the second to the fourth floor of the building, you will reach the room with the highest triangular roof seen from the exterior. It is a watchtower from which you can see 360 degrees around the building, and the natural environment around Ebetsu, including the Nopporo primeval forest and Tarumae Mountain, can be widely confirmed.
After enjoying the view, let's take a walk around the museum. First, let's start with the "Northern Ceramics Exhibition Room. The neatly arranged works of art greet you with a tranquil atmosphere.
The works on display are all from kilns that are currently active in Hokkaido. Visitors are sure to lose track of time as they encounter each unique piece of pottery created by active artists.
At the "Komori Shinobu Memorial Room," visitors can trace the footsteps of Shinobu Komori, who is said to have contributed greatly to the development of pottery and ceramic art in Hokkaido and beyond.
Mr. Komori was born in Osaka City in 1889 and drifted from place to place until his death in Ebetsu City in 1962. His tumultuous life and passion for pottery are reflected in his works.
Now that we have seen a variety of pottery works, the atmosphere of the "Brick Exhibition Room" changes dramatically. The production of red bricks in Hokkaido is said to have begun in the late Edo period. In Ebetsu, too, the production of red bricks began around 1890 and eventually developed into a major brick production area.
Even today, bricks from Ebetsu are widely used in such places as Sapporo's Kita 3-jo Plaza "Akapura" and the ball park in Kita Hiroshima City, which is scheduled to open in 2023.
Here, visitors can learn about the history of red brick production through a diorama of a climbing kiln and other ingenious exhibits, in addition to actual materials such as valuable bricks and production tools from the Meiji era. Not only tourists, but also Sapporo citizens and other local residents living in the Ebetsu area are welcome to stop by during a weekend drive.
There is also a group pottery class for parents and children, so if you are interested, check the official website.
