This film festival started in 2006 and is commonly known as "SAPPORO Short Fest". Short films ranging in length from a few minutes to 30 minutes, including documentaries, animations and dramas, are entered from all over the world. During the festival period, the Grand Prix and other award-winning and nominated films will be screened daily at movie theaters and other venues in the city. Admission is free for high school students and younger (with some exceptions). In addition to holding workshops and a contest in which participants are required to complete a one-minute film within 24 hours with the aim of nurturing the next generation of filmmakers, the festival also functions as the only short film and market in Japan that trades submitted films.
