Jean-François Millet (1814–1875) was a central artist of the Barbizon School. Although he was never particularly good at writing, at the urging of his friends he began to record his attitude towards art and his thoughts on artists and their works in letters. These letters reveal the joys and struggles, as well as the sorrows and anguish, that came with the creative process, and reveal the inner workings of the painter Millet and the ever-changing nature of his thoughts.

This exhibition traces Millet's words, as found in letters and other documents, and explores the artistic views embodied in his works and his relationship with the Barbizon School painters.
