The Lilac Festival began in the 34th year of the Showa era (1959) following a call from cultural figures 'to hold a culturally rich event during the season when the lilac flowers are in full bloom.' In the 35th year of the Showa era (1960), the lilac was also chosen as the official tree of Sapporo, and it became a tree so beloved by the citizens that it could be seen in the front yard of any home. Now, it has become established among the citizens as a festival that heralds the arrival of early summer in Sapporo, and has grown into a representative spring event of Sapporo.
