Shopping without worrying about the weather at the birthplace of Japanese beer brewing
This commercial facility stands on the former site of the Kaitakushi Beer Brewery, the first beer brewery built by the Japanese in 1876 (9th year of Meiji). The building is divided into seven main areas, the most distinctive of which is the "atrium," a large greenhouse-like structure. The atrium, which spans from the basement to the fourth floor, is a pleasant space that is flooded with sunlight. Visitors can enjoy shopping while browsing the outdoor stores, general merchandise stores, interior design stores, and cafes that line the atrium.
From November to late December, a huge Christmas tree brought from Hiroo Town in Tokachi is decorated and illuminated with music at 16:00. The Chimney Square is also home to the Sapporo Kaitakushi Beer and Brewery, where visitors can enjoy freshly brewed beer for only 250 yen, recreating the taste of the brewery's original beer for the same price.
The chimney, the symbol of the brewery, rises high above the square, which is nicknamed "Chimney Square. In winter, Santa Claus climbs up the chimney.
